Anna Milone on the terrace of the house, among the red balustrades, with the palms and the sea behind her

Anna Milone

The house is hers, and she opens the door

Anna is a góralka: from the mountains of southern Poland. She passed through Canada. More than thirty years ago she arrived in Cuba.

She never left.

She fell in love with the island and with its people, and she stayed. Nobody stays somewhere thirty years for the scenery.

Thirty years is longer than most people have lived on their own street. Here it is not a long holiday, it is half a life in Boca de Camarioca. Knowing where the fish is bought in the morning, which road is good and what time to set off for Havana is not learned any other way.

She guides the trips herself. That is why the kitchen cooks Polish with what Cuba gives, and why the trips are in Polish and in English. It is not a service that was hired in, it is the owner of the house showing you her island.

You are not met by a front desk. You are met by someone who also came from somewhere else, and who has spent thirty years learning this island.

The Cuba that doesn't fit in a hotel

You can spend a week in Cuba without ever seeing Cuba. Not from this house: the trips are planned with you. Where to go, how to get there and how long it takes.

And they are guided: in native Polish and native English. No catching half a tour in a language that is not yours.

The table

The kitchen is Polish. The market is Cuban.

You eat here, in the house. The fish is bought in the village in the morning, the fruit and the vegetables are in season and from next door, and what gets cooked with them are the dishes you grow up on in Poland.

There is no menu: whatever was at the market that morning decides it. Tell us in advance how many you are and what time you want to sit down.

The roof terrace

Your body came on holiday too

Up on the roof terrace there is yoga. Eating well is half of resting; the other half is stretching in the open air before the sun gets hard, with no hurry and no clock.

Where you'll be
